History
The Disciples d’Auguste Escoffier was created in 1954 by Jean Ducroux, chef de cuisine in Nice and president of la Fraternelle des Cuisiniers.
In this fraternity they organised a competition; le Grand Prix Auguste Escoffier. However, there were no gastronomic associations that existed in the South of France at the time, so they had the idea to unite chefs from the large hotels in the region and have them participate in the competition. They developed a process of induction and a proclamation to uphold the standards set by Auguste Escoffier, which led to the official formation of the association Les Disciples d’Auguste Escoffier.
The first opening chapter was held in the early 60s under the presidency of Eugène Herbodeau who worked with Escoffier himself and wrote a book on him. To this day over 80 Disciples have been inducted into the association which is now also represented by various delegations around the world.
Supporting Feast and Developing the Culinary Arts
At the end of 2016, Feast made the decision to go on a hiatus to allow time to restructure, re-energize and refocus the organization. However, the education programme has continued running in the background and they aim to relaunch at the end of the year.
Feast are proud to announce that over the last few years, fifteen dedicated and talented young chefs were put through chef school; four of whom are hearing-impaired, which was a first for the South African culinary industry. Thanks to public support, these students were able to pursue their chosen careers and subsequently continue the evolution of the global culinary industry.
Every bit helps and pushes them that much closer to putting another aspiring chef, lacking the financial means, through school. Whether you would be like to sponsor a student, contribute to an event or even partner with them to create something special, we welcome any contribution to the Feast cause.
As Les Disciples d’Auguste Escoffier South Africa supports the encouraging and educating of young talent in the culinary arts, we have chosen to partner with Feast Food and Wine to ensure that many more young and aspiring chefs benefit from the proceeds generated through our events.
Born in 2009, Feast Food and Wine is a gathering-point for a group of vibrant, curious and forward-thinking people in the South African environment. They are a Johannesburg-based Social Enterprise, which strive to provide novel and diverse experiences based around the love of good food and wine, as a way of gathering funds to assist trainee chefs who need financial support. This gives these trainee chefs an opportunity to make their mark in the culinary industry and truly fulfill their potential.
